Academic Peer Advisors (APAs)

Description: APA positions exist within various academic departments and the deans' offices in coordination with Advising Services. Applicants generally have a very good understanding of their major and are trained in the specifics of the position. Peer Advisors provide academic peer advising and referral to UC Davis undergraduates regarding specific course as well as major/college/university graduation requirements. Serves as peer advisor for academic department, often holds sole position as a student representative on departmental committees. Peer Advisors provide faculty and department chair with a student perspective and input on advising needs. Develops and conducts special advising projects for department such as newsletter, information workshops, etc.

Job Requirements:  Peer advisors are expected to have knowledge of the course catalog and participate in staff development and training sessions beginning in September 2008.  Applicants must be familiar with campus resources, individual course requirements, internships related to the major, career opportunities/resources, course selection and graduate school programs within the major.  Peer Advisors participate in the Outstanding Faculty and Staff Advisor Awards.  Submits a quarterly report.  Must sponsor a minimum of one program or project per quarter. 

Qualifications: Must be a registered UC Davis undergraduate student in good academic standing as well as completion of a certain number of upper division courses. Must make a three-quarter time commitment. Note: due to the commitment level of this position, applicants may not hold concurrent APA and RA (Resident Advisor) positions.

Academic Peer Advising (APA) Program Student Coordinator (Supervisor)

Description: STUDENT COORDINATOR (SUPERVISOR) ACADEMIC PEER ADVISING PROGRAM: Full responsibility for coordination and supervision of the Academic Peer Advising Program including the training and supervision of 120+ Academic Peer Advisors. Allocation, distribution and monitoring of staff resources. Compiles data from numerous sources to prepare charts and write formal quarterly reports/annual report. Initiates, plans and conducts ongoing staff development for Academic Peer Advising staff. Develops and nurtures effective working relationships with 70+ academic departments where Academic Peer Advisors work -- consulting with departmental chair, and other administrative staff. Periodically monitors peers` positions in the department to assure their activities are in compliance with their job descriptions. Provides direction and input on peer staff personnel matters. Initiates and conducts special projects such as the campus wide Outstanding Faculty and Staff Advisor Award selection process. Reports to the Advising Services Department and meets regularly with Program Director to solicit consultation on special problems.

The First Resort Peer Advisor


Job Title: Assistant III -- THE FIRST RESORT PEER ADVISOR

Description: The First Resort Peer Advisors provide academic advising for undergraduate students regarding course selection, understanding requirements, using online Web-based registration, finding a major, and other academic concerns. Assist students in the Career and Graduate Resource Center as well as the Residence Hall Academic Advising Centers. Assist students by making appropriate referrals to units within South Hall and to other campus departments. Present evening educational outreach programs on various academic subjects in the residence halls as part of the Residence Hall Advising Team (RHAT). Responsible for individual projects and general assistance as designated by Advising Services staff.

The First Resort Student Coordinator (Supervisor)

Health Sciences Peer Advisor


Job Title: Assistant III - Health Science Advising Peer Advisor

Description: The HSA peer advisor's primary responsibilities are advising other students in their chosen job area (e.g. pre-med advising, pre-dental advising), developing and planning informational programs/workshops in that job area (see CALENDAR on listserv), and maintaining/upgrading informational handouts and materials in the Resource Room (114 South Hall). Additional duties include corresponding with professional training programs, attending staff meetings and providing input into staff activities.  Hours are flexible and some parts of the year may be busier than others.

Job Requirements: Must be a registered UC Davis student for the entire 2008-08 academic year; all majors welcome.  Preference given to those who are knowledgeable their chosen field (e.g. internships) and the application process for schools in that field, and those who will themselves be applying in 2009 or 2010 to health professions schools in their chosen job area.

Veterinary Student Advisor

Job Title: Veterinary Student Advisor

Description: The vet student advisor’s primary responsibilities are advising students and alumni who are preparing for post-baccalaureate study in veterinary medicine as well as developing, planning and publicizing pre-vet programs/workshops (e.g. the Vet School Application Workshop) and maintaining/upgrading informational handouts and materials in the Career & Graduate Study Resource Center (114 South Hall) and online.  Additional duties include acting as liaison to the UC Davis Vet School and the Vet Aide Club, attending staff meetings and providing input into staff activities.  Hours are flexible and can be varied from week-to-week to suit your academic schedule; some parts of the year may be busier than others.

Job Requirements:Must be a registered student in the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine during the year of hire (3 quarter commitment).  Must be available for 5-10 hours of shadowing/training during Spring Quarter 2008 (flexible and paid).  Good interpersonal, organizational and communication skills are essential.

Orientation Leader (42 Positions)

Description: Orientation is an academic advising, course registration and orientation program for new students. It is an important transition activity for those embarking on a University educational experience. Forty -two undergraduates serve as the program staff. Each staff member receives a salary stipend, meals and a single room in the residence halls (Mid-June to Mid-August). Orientation Leaders spend most of each day and the evening hours working directly with new students and their parents–providing academic advice, leading group discussions, conducting tours, answering questions and doing other related tasks (see attached job description and application). It is a very demanding and challenging work experience. This is a paid student leadership position.

Qualifications: Individuals selected must be comfortable doing public speaking, accomplishing a wide range of tasks, and working with diverse groups. High energy, flexibility, and a strong interest in learning about UC Davis are very important. Applicants must be registered UC Davis students for Winter/Spring Quarters 2008, and must be in good academic standing (GPA 2.0 or above and not on academic probation). Applicants must have a valid driver's license. Orientation participates in the DMV Notice System to verify validity of driver's license, and background checks are conducted by the UC Davis Police Department. Those selected must attend training which consists of two Education courses in Spring Quarter for a total of four units. Attendance at all training sessions is mandatory. During the summer employment period, staff members cannot have any other ongoing commitments, e.g., Summer Session, another job, grad school test preparation course, etc.

Transfer Orientation Leader (25 Positions)

Description: Serve as an official University representative and general resource to program participants. Serve as an academic peer advisor to students selecting and enrolling in courses for their first term at the University. Train and assist students in use of the online course registration system. Attend Spring Quarter class training to become familiar with UC Davis, student services, advising information, and the general operation of the Orientation Program. Lead both large and small group discussions with students and parents. Be familiar with and willing to enforce all University and Orientation policies as they relate to student behavior. Act as host/hostess to students and parents attending Orientation. There are 25 Transfer Orientation Leader positions available for summer 2008. Those selected must attend training which consists of two Education courses in Spring Quarter for a total of four units. Qualifications: Transfer Orientation Leader applicants should be a transfer student and must be a registered UC Davis undergraduate student for both Winter and Spring Quarters 2008 and must be in good academic standing (Good Academic standing and not on probation). Candidates should be excellent representatives of the University who are dedicated to helping new students learn about the UC Davis resources, programs and campus. Orientation Leaders should be able to speak in front of large audiences and facilitate small group discussions while having high energy, a positive attitude and a strong work ethic. Candidates must also have strong communication skills and be willing to commit to working with the team of advisors until June 27, 2008. Description: Back-end server programming for database driven online applications/publications.  Creation and maintenance of complex navigation systems, online dynamic web elements, Flash systems, and online forms and databases for high visibility campus Web sites.  Implementation of security and related issues; Maintenance and update of procedure manual documentation. 

Qualifications: Knowledge of Web site development and administration, HTML, PHP, JavaScript, Python, PERL, MySQL, building web forms, templates, libraries, cascading style sheets, creating gifs, tiffs, jpgs, etc, as related to print/web publications required. Adobe Acrobat, HTML editors, Flash, Photoshop, File Maker Pro, MS Office, Firefox, IE required; Corel Draw, WordPerfect, MS Excel, MS Outlook, helpful.


Skill and ability to work with Web browsers, ftp, file-exchange programs, online databases, Web audio/video applications and other Web software tools.  Demonstrated experience using HTML source code, Cascading Style Sheets and Dynamic HTML.  Applicants must be able to execute computer/server maintenance and troubleshooting under tight deadlines and shifting priorities as assigned by the Electronic & Print Communications Coordinator.  Applicant must be able to design (architecture/structure), program, and implement complex dynamic web navigation systems.  Applicant must be able to plan, build, implement and maintain online forms.  Experience in web form publications, web site development and administration is required.  Demonstrated ability to learn new software quickly, on an individual basis, from manuals, web or other resources.  Skill to communicate effectively with staff regarding computer/server problems, production of publications, and other related issues to clients with varying levels of computing experience in an appropriate and professional manner.
