AGGIES MAKE FINAL TUNE-UP WITH BLUE-GOLD GAME

DAVIS, Calif. --- Quarterback Jon Grant completed 10 of 14 passes for 117 yards to help highlight the UC Davis offense on Friday night while cornerback Jeremy Scott had a 43-yard interception return to help pace the defense as UC Davis hosted its annual Blue-Gold scrimmage before several hundred fans on Friday night at Toomey Field.

The offense scored four times during the controlled scrimmage, reaching the end zone during each of the four periods. Marcus Nolan rushed for a two-yard score, Grant hit sophomore receiver Brandon Rice with a 7-yard TD pass, Demario Warren had a 1-yard plunge and freshman P.J. Vallier finished the scoring with a two-yard run.

Backup quarterback Tim Plough went 10-of-13 for 107 yards while four Aggie receivers each had three catches. Fourteen receivers caught passes in the game. Warren rushed for 48 yards on 15 carries while Vallier had 38 yards on 10 rushes. Five running backs had at least 25 yards, including freshman Joe Trombetta who had 35 on just six carries.

Scott picked off Grant and returned the interception 43 yards for the Aggie defense, which recorded seven sacks in the game; three of them coming during the regulation portion of the scrimmage and four more coming while mostly freshmen on both sides of the ball saw action in the latter stages of the night. Defensive end James Amos, linebacker Tyler Pringle and tackle John Faletoese had sacks among the UC Davis regulars.

Linebacker Mike Healey had eight trackles while cornerback Nevan Bergan and safety Nero Evero each had five stops, most among the UC Davis returners.

"I think we did some good things," said 14th-year head coach Bob Biggs. "We know each other so well it's hard to really shine."

UC Davis, which finished 6-5 last year and won a share of the Great West Football Conference championship, will now turn its attention to its season-opener on Sept. 2 at Northern Colorado. The game is the first of five straight on the road to start the season for the Aggies.
